Si quieres repasar lo básico sobre to be, to do y to have repasa la primera entrada de Gramática del blog.

1. Preguntas de Sí o No (Yes/No Questions)

Buscan confirmar o denegar una información. La respuesta esperada es Yes o No.

Regla general de estructura:

Auxiliar / Modal / Verb To Be + Sujeto + Verbo principal + Complementos + ?

A. Con el verbo To Be (Presente y Pasado Simple)

El verbo to be funciona como su propio auxiliar. No necesita do/does/did; simplemente pasa al principio de la frase.

  • Are you ready for the exam?
  • Was she at the party yesterday?

B. Con verbos ordinarios (Presente Simple y Pasado Simple)

Present Simple:

  • Do you live near the city center?
  • Does he work on Saturdays? (Fíjate que el verbo "work" no lleva "-s" porque ya la lleva el auxiliar "does").

Past Simple:

  • Did they finish the project on time?

C. Con tiempos compuestos (Continuous, Perfect)

  • Present Continuous: Are you studying for the test?
  • Present Perfect: Have you ever visited London?
  • Past Continuous: Were they sleeping when you arrived?

D. Con verbos modales (Can, Could, Should, Must, Would, Will)

  • Can you play the guitar?
  • Will they travel next summer?
  • Should I call him now?

Who (Quién) | What (Qué / Cuál) | Where (Dónde) | When (Cuándo) | Why (Por qué) | How (Cómo) | Which (Cuál / Cuáles - entre opciones limitadas) | Whose (De quién)

Regla general de estructura:

Wh- word + Auxiliar / Modal / To Be + Sujeto + Verbo principal + Complementos + ?

Ejemplos según la estructura estándar:

  • Con verbo To Be: Where is my notebook?
  • Con Presente Simple: What time do you usually wake up?
  • Con Pasado Simple: Why did they sell their house?
  • Con Modales: How can I improve my English fluency?
  • Con tiempos perfectos: Where have you been all morning?

  • Who did you call yesterday? → Peter, I called Peter.

  • Who called you yesterday? → Peter, Peter called me.

Otro ejemplo:

  • What happened last night? → Something.
Something happened last night).

4. Question Tags (Preguntas de Confirmación)

Afirmativa + tag negativa / Negativa + tag afirmativa

  • You are ready, aren't you? (estás preparado, verdad?)
  • She doesn't work here, does she? (ella no trabaja aquí, verdad?)
  • They have finished the report, haven't they? (ellos han acabado el informe, verdad?)
  • He can drive, can't he? (él sabe conducir, verdad?)

Con to be, auxiliares y modales se repite el verbo auxiliar en la tag. Con verbos ordinarios en Present Simple y Past Simple, se emplea do/does/did:

  • You like coffee, don't you? (te gusta el café, verdad?)
  • She works here, doesn't she? (ella trabaja aquí, verdad?)
  • They arrived early, didn't they? (ellos llegaron temprano, verdad?)

Importante: el sujeto de la tag debe ser un pronombre (he, she, it, they...). Hay algunas formas especiales que conviene recordar, como I amaren't I?.
